JIU-JITSU GI CARE
A jiu jitsu gi will last a few years when treated with respect. Following these suggestions will help you maintain your equipment in first class order.
- Hang dry your jiu jitsu gi after every use.
- Do NOT leave a wet/sweaty gi balled up in your gi bag.
- Turn the gi inside out during wash.
- Do not use bleach or detergent with bleach.
- Wash your jiu jitsu gi BEFORE it starts to smell.
WASHING THE JIU-JITSU GI
Always wash your jiu jitsu gi in cold water only. This helps to lift stains from blood, sweat, and dyed materials. (Warm or hot water will set them into the material.) Then use a low heat cycle to dry your gi. You may hang dry your jiu jitsu gi if you do not mind the material feeling rough and waiting a day (or two for double weaves) before you can wear your gi again.
Some jiu jitsu kimonos can not hold up to daily washing and drying. While hang drying will undoubtedly increase its life span we have not found that its benefit outweighs the hassle or decreases the gi lifespan drastically. All jiu jitsu gi manufacturers have taken special care in designing and manufacturing the gis to put up with constant use. Which includes regular wash and machine drying cycles. Your jiu jitsu gi should last you a couple of years with moderate use and typical care.
SHRINKING YOUR NEW JIU-JITSU KIMONO
To shrink you new jiu jitsu gi just wash it in cold water and then dry it on a low heat cycle until completely dry. This will achieve almost maximum shrinkage of the material.
Some final suggestions:
Never use bleach! It eats cotton fibers and will greatly shorten the life span of you jiu jitsu kimono. For stain issues try an organic oxidizer (like Oxyclean).
Wash your jiu jitsu gi soon after use to prevent stains, mildew, mold and rot from setting into the fiber.
And even though you roll around on the ground in class, leaving your jiu jitsu gi lying around on a dirty floor will grind excess dirt into the material which will help weaken it over time.
Remember, a clean gi shows respect for your master, your friends and yourself!
